LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team turned in another winning performance on Thursday, this time in the opening match of the UC San Diego Tournament.
The Golden Eagles used a balanced attack to sweep past Seattle Pacific, 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A., which won all three of its matches in its own tournament last week, moved to 4-0 with the victory.
The Golden Eagles will play twice on Friday with matches against BYU-Hawaii and Lynn University.
Ursula Vieira had a match-high 14 kills and two blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Gabriela Bulawczyk had eight kills and Keslie Brown and Makinna Hibbard had seven kills each. Brown also had 25 set assists, while Bulawczyk had a team-high 23 digs and Stefanie Gay had 20 digs.
Cal State L.A. hit at a .231 clip, while holding Seattle Pacific (1-4) to a .104 percentage. The Golden Eagles had a 40-32 advantage in kills and had a 7-3.5 edge in blocks.
The Golden Eagles rallied from a 10-8 deficit in the first set that began with big swings. Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 4-0 lead, only to see Seattle Pacific rattle off five straight points to take the lead. A kill by Bulawczyk gave Cal State L.A. a 14-13 advantage and the Golden Eagles never trailed again. A kill by Bulawczyk gave the Golden Eagles a set point at 24-16 and a kill by Brown finished it at 25-17.
The Golden Eagles raced to a 13-6 lead in the second set, only to see Seattle Pacific close to within one point twice, the final time at 17-16. A kill by Brown, an ace by Brown and a kill by Vieira gave the Golden Eagles some breathing room at 20-16 and Cal State L.A. led by at least three points the rest of the frame.
Cal State L.A. jumped out to a quick 16-7 lead in the final set and held off a late Seattle Pacific rally. The Falcons closed to within 16-13, but a kill by Vieira snapped a 6-0 run and restored order. The Golden Eagles got to match point on a kill by Bulawczyk and a kill by Vieira ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will face BYU-Hawaii at 1:30 p.m. and Lynn University at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and then conclude tournament play with a match against Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday.
